The Wollombi Convict Trail and Historic Town

On the convict trail

In aboriginal language Wollombi means “meeting place of the waters”.

An extraordinary feat of engineering built over 10 years from 1826, the Wollombi Convict Trail traverses sandstone gorges, razorback ridges and towering passes. Much of the original convict built road remains in use today and even though a lot of the original surface has been buried under bitumen, convict-built remains such as stone retaining walls, pick-dressed cuttings, culverts, bridges and stone cut drains can still be clearly seen.

Whatever route you take to reach Wollombi, you are travelling on part of the Great North Road - the Convict Trail.

Wollombi itself will charm you with its cafes, shops and a lovely ol country tavern, as well as beautiful heritage buildings such as the old convict stone Courthouse, St Michael’s Church, St John’s Church and the Endeavour Museum. Local vineyards and cellar doors include Wollombi Wines and Undercliff Winery.

Another popular attraction is the World Heritage-listed Yengo National Park, where you’ll find bushwalking and mountain bike trails.

Just an hour's drive from where you'll pick up your very own Top Down Rentals convertible, Wollombi is a must-see for lovers of heritage architecture as well as fine food and wine.
